Honoring Our Public Servants
Connecting Citizens with Their Government
Public Service Recognition Week (PSRW) is a time set aside to honor individuals who serve our nation as federal, state, county and local government employees. It is a valuable recognition program intended to help build workplace culture and support meaningful employee engagement.
CalHR invites each department to participate in themed event days during PSRW. Recommended events are highly encouraged but not mandatory. Departments can also establish their own unique activities for the week. \

Public Service Recognition Week Schedule of Events
May 4, 2026: Meaningful Monday – Start the week with purpose and pride.
Focus: Recognition of public service mission and individual impact.
Goal: Help employees see how their daily work contributes to the greater good.
Opening Message from Leadership – Departments leaders kick off PSRW with a video or in-person message recognizing staff contributions. These messages should ideally tie back to the department’s mission and goals as outlined in their strategic plans, reinforcing the connection between employee efforts and organizational priorities.
“Why We Serve” Activity- Invite employees to post or share why they joined public service.
Mission Moments- As a form of public praise, people leaders share short stories about how their team’s work impacts Californians.
Benefits for a Life Well Lived: Discover What’s Available to You – Focus on how benefits can enhance daily life by encouraging employees to take a moment today to explore one benefit they haven’t used yet and see how it can support what matters most to them. Visit CalHR Benefits to learn more.

Focus: Peer-to-peer recognition and connection.
Goal: Strengthen workplace relationships and encourage mutual appreciation.
Gratitude Flow – Each employee takes a moment to recognize a teammate for something specific. Once recognized, that employee keeps the momentum going by recognizing someone else. The recognition “travels” throughout the day, creating a positive ripple effect across the team. This activity can be easily adapted for small team meetings or scaled up for division- or department-wide gatherings, fostering a culture of appreciation and connection at any level.
Lunch & Laughs – Encourage teams to share a meal, coffee break, or fun activity (trivia, icebreaker bingo).
Sharing a Strength (CliftonStrengths)– Take your discussion to the next level! Encourage employees to share one of their Gallup CliftonStrengths (or personal strength they identify with) and explain how they use it in their role. This activity can be done during team meetings, on a shared board or virtually through Microsoft Teams.
Bonus: Want deeper insights? Invite staff to take the one-day “CliftonStrengths: Discover Your Top 5” course on CalLearns to uncover their top five strengths and bring those insights to the discussion. Upcoming sessions are available on Apr.9 and Jun.9.
